A few easy rules…

Five easy pieces is supposed to be, well, easy. But there’s a few basic rules that we advise, just for safety’s sake:

  1. Don’t pick up anything sharp or rusted. Be careful with bits of metal or broken glass. And needles of any sort are a definite, don’t-even-consider-it no-no.
  2. Wear gloves if you like, and always make sure to wash your hands after you’ve picked up your five easy pieces.
  3. You can collect the five easy pieces in a plastic bag — oftentimes, that plastic bag itself is one of your five pieces! — and toss it in any trash can you can, either municipal or when you get home. And try to recycle stuff that can be recycled: aluminum cans, plastic and glass bottles, newspapers, etc., either in public recycling bins or at home.

An easy idea for Earth Day or any day

Five Easy Pieces is devoted to a simple idea: pick up or recycle five pieces of trash a day and the planet will be a cleaner place. Five easy pieces, every single day, would mean that every weeks, you’d see thousands of fewer empty cans, discarded cups, past-their-prime napkins, and other types of garbage on your street, in your park, and in your town, city, or community. It shouldn’t be a chore — trash is everywhere, unfortunately — and picking it up takes less time than getting a cup of coffee. Moreover, it can be done on your walk to work, your trip to the grocery or any time in between.
